Taking care of your lawn is the key to a lush, healthy lawn all year-round. Here are the top tips to achieve your dream lawn.
Keep it Watered: If we’ve had little to no rain, watering deeply once a week is recommended. This keeps the grass healthy and encourages a deep root system.
Control Weeds: Even though your grass is not actively growing, it is important to mow the weeds before they flower and go to seed, this will drastically reduce the number of your turf grass weeds in the future. In January/February, apply corn gluten meal as a pre-emergent herbicide to reduce the number of warm season weeds in your turf. (Available in granular or liquid.)
Conditioning the Soil: This may be the best thing you can do for your lawn. Conditioning will improve the soil structure and increases your lawn’s soil biology while providing vital nutrients to the turf. This can be done in February/March; distributed a good finely screened compost at a rate of about ¼ inch over the entire lawn.
Aerate the Soil: When you aerate the soil it allows oxygen to the root system of your lawn which can significantly help when trying to get your St. Augustin grass to fill back in after coming out of dormancy.
Bug Control: For those of you who want to protect your lawn against grubs, chinch bugs, and other harmful insects before damage is done; applying beneficial nematodes, in late February or early March, can protect your lawn for the entire spring season.
Fertilize at the Correct Time: The rule of thumb is to fertilizer your lawn once it actively starts to grow again this occurs in March/April, depending on the weather. Use a fertilizer with high nitrogen to promote healthy new green growth.
Test Your Soil: If there seems to be a real problem, testing your soil can help you determine the precise level of pH and the amount of necessary nutrients like nitrogen in your soil.
1. Prevent weeds: Kill them before they come up by using a pre-emergent product to eliminate weeds by stopping their seeds from sprouting.
2. Never mow your lawn too short:
Mowing your lawn too short can actually damage the grass. Wonder why your grass turns a yellow-brown color when you mow too low? That’s because the grass is using energy stored in its roots instead of getting energy from photosynthesis in the leaf. The general rule is to cut ⅓ of your grass and never more.
3. Water your lawn in the morning:
This is the best time to water the lawn because the sun will help with drying the grass. Watering at night can actually create diseases in the grass as there will be prolonged moisture. The roots need water, but your lawn shouldn’t have standing water on it for too long.
One of the most important things for a healthy lawn is a regular lawn care schedule. As long as the grass is growing, lawns should be mowed pretty frequently. The length will vary depending on what type of grass is growing in your yard, but generally speaking 2.5 to 3 inches is a healthy height.
