" The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."

Chinese Proverb

Why Plant Trees & Shrubs?

Lets face it we need trees, not only for the environmental (providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate impact, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife) but for a much, much deeper basic human need.  Trees and plants are imprinted onto our souls.  Studies show then we are near trees and plants we feel more relaxed, comfortable and feel at peace.

Like people, no two trees are the same. Different species display a seemingly endless variety of shapes,  textures and vibrant colors. Even individual trees vary their appearance throughout the course of the year as the seasons change.

Trees also have a financial impact:   Individual trees and shrubs have value and contribute to savings, but it is the collective influence of a well-maintained landscape that makes a real economic impact and has the greatest effect on property value. Direct economic benefits come from a savings in energy costs. Cooling costs are reduced in a tree-shaded home, and heating costs lowered when a tree serves as a windbreak. According to the USDA Forest Service, “Trees properly placed around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30% and save 20-50 percent in energy used for heating.”

Property values of homes with well-maintained yards are up to 20% higher than others. Here are some eye-opening statistics regarding the effect of trees and shrubs:

  • Homes with “excellent” landscaping can expect a sale price 6-7% higher than equivalent houses with “good” landscaping. Improving “average” to “good” landscaping can result in a 4-5% increase.– Clemson University
  • Landscaping can bring a recovery value of 100-200% at selling time. (Kitchen remodeling brings 75-125%, bathroom remodeling 20-120%)– Money Magazine
  • 99% of real estate appraisers concurred that landscaping enhances the sales appeal of real estate.– Trendnomics, National Gardening Association
  • 98% of realtors believe that mature trees have a “strong or moderate impact” on the salability of homes  - American Forests, Arbor National Mortgage

Jacaranda

Purple Jacaranda tree

The Jacaranda tree is an excellent choice for our Inland Empire climate.  Jacaranda name means  “fragrant”, which is why it’s one of the favorite flowering trees for the I.E.,

It has glorious displays of purple-blue, fragrant cluster of flowers cover the canopy of the tree in late spring.

It can reach 30-45 ft. in height and width, and creates a beautiful purple-blue carpet underneath after blossoms fall.  NOTE:  Keep these trees far away from swimming pools or other objects that might be hard to clean.

Crape Myrtle

Crape Maple Tree

Another one of the best flowering trees for Moreno Valley area landscapes is the Crape Myrtle. This flowering tree is an extremely versatile choice.  Sizes range from shrub size  to vase-shaped trees of 15-25 ft.

Abundant blooms persist for many weeks in the summer months.  They can have flowers in varying whites, purples, pinks, and reds.

These Southern California flowering trees also provide great fall interest with brightly changing foliage and a unique, year-round display of their colored, mottled trunk bark.

Mimosa or Silk Tree

Mimosa or Silk Tree

Mimosa or Silk Tree as its called,  have a feathery and aromatic flowers that adds a  lovely burst of color especially.

It grows to 15-50 ft. tall, with dappled shade for areas below.  Flowers vary in color, however typically combine white, pink, and red in their delicate, silk-like petals. It blooms from late spring and into mid-summer.

We feel it’s a great choice for Moreno Valley   area homes.  Roots like to spread, so it is best not to plant this tree close to a sidewalk or a patio where it could cause damage.

Boxwood Shrub

Red Maple Tree

Mimosa or Silk Tree

Boxwoods are a slow-growing evergreen shrubs and can be used as an accent, screening or edge plant.

The compact-growing leaf structure lets them respond well to pruning, which makes them popular as knot-garden plants, as topiary plants, and as bonsai plants. While people occasionally use boxwood shrubs as specimen plants in their landscape-design work, they are more often grouped together in foundation plantings or to form hedges.

The Red Maple tree is loved for its vibrant eye-catching red-orange leaves that emerge each autumn.

Surprisingly they are easy to care for, tolerating both full sun and partial shade, as well as moist or dry soil.  They can grow up to two feet per year.  Red flower buds form in winter, opening into showy red flowers before the tree leaf's out. New branches and leaf stems are also red, and after the flowers fade, reddish-colored fruit takes their place.

Azalea

Spring explodes with color when you include azaleas in your yard.  Their showy flowers open in a rainbow of hues, exciting the senses.   You can find any color you want.

When viewed in the garden, they are drop-dead gorgeous. A single bush is enchanting when viewed close up. A grouping of them viewed at a distance or encountered in a woodland setting is nothing short of glorious. Their form, habit, and amazing colors will dominate the spring landscape.
